Jane-Emily

Jane-Emily
by Patricia Clapp, originally published in 1969.

Summary
Louisa is eighteen the year she spends the summer in an elegant old mansion with her nine-year-old orphaned niece, Jane, and Mrs. Canfield, Jane's grandmother. Louisa enjoys herself immensely, especially when a good looking young doctor comes to call. But she is disturbed by Jane's obsession with the reflecting ball in the mansion's beautiful garden and horrified when she discovers the cause. Jane has become possessed by the image she sees there -- the face of Mrs. Canfield's long-dead daughter, Emily. And unless Louisa acts swiftly, Jane will follow Emily into death.
